Wendy Carrillo’s campaign for Assembly District 51 announced today that Congresswomen Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-40) and Karen Bass (D-37) have endorsed Carrillo’s candidacy for State Assembly.
“I am proud to endorse Wendy Carrillo for State Assembly,” said Congresswoman Roybal-Allard. “Wendy is a daughter of this district, with deep roots in our community. She has a remarkable record as a champion for our children and families, making her the clear choice for Assembly. Wendy understands that healthcare is a right, not a privilege, and she’ll fight for access to quality healthcare for all Californians. If elected, I know we can count on Wendy to stand against the Trump Administration’s attacks on healthcare and carry on the fight for universal healthcare.”
Congresswoman Roybal-Allard is the first Mexican-American woman elected to Congress in United States history, and currently represents communities in AD 51. She has been at the forefront of the fight to improve the quality and affordability of health services, co-sponsoring the Medicare for All Act, HR 676 by Congressman John Conyers. She has successfully secured funding for local health needs, including infant and child care, prenatal health, dental care, HIV testing, substance abuse, diabetes treatment, and tele-health services.
Congresswoman Bass said: “I’m proud to endorse Wendy Carrillo for State Assembly. Wendy knows firsthand about the struggle for social justice and equality, and has been a remarkable champion for our progressive values throughout her life. Wendy will be a key ally when it comes to standing up to the Trump Administration’s attacks on our immigrants, women and communities of color, and we can count on her to be courageous voice in Sacramento on behalf of all Californians.”
When she was elected Speaker of the California State Assembly in 2008, then-Assemblymember Bass became the first African-American woman to be elected to lead a state legislature. As a Member of Congress, Congresswoman Bass has been a champion for foster youth and quality healthcare, fighting for social justice and economic opportunity for all Californians.

Congresswomen Roybal-Allard and Bass’ endorsements come on the heels of a wave of momentum surging behind Carrillo’s campaign. Carrillo, who placed first in the October 3rd Special Primary Election, is the only candidate to be endorsed by the California Democratic Party, and has earned the strong support of the California Democratic Legislative Women’s Caucus, Congressman Jimmy Gomez (D-34), Senate President pro Tem Kevin de León, the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor and labor leader and civil rights pioneer, Dolores Huerta.
The General Election for AD 51 will be held on December 5, 2017.
