Wendy Carrillo’s campaign announced today that Congressman Jimmy Gomez (D-34) has endorsed Wendy Carrillo for Assembly, in the seat he held prior to his election to Congress.

“Wendy Carrillo will make an excellent Assemblymember for the people I represented in the California State Legislature,” said Congressman Gomez. “She is a proven working-class progressive who understands that she must represent everyone in the 51st District. With the Trump Administration continuing to target our communities, I know Wendy will be a champion for our families in the fight for quality education, better healthcare, affordable housing, high wage jobs and protecting our most vulnerable residents including women, seniors, and immigrants. Wendy has been fighting for our communities her entire life and is my choice to represent us in the State Assembly.”

Congressman Gomez’s key endorsement comes on the heels of Carrillo’s first-place finish among a field of 13 candidates in the October 3rd Primary.

Wendy Carrillo said: “I am truly honored to have the strong support of Congressman Jimmy Gomez, a lifelong progressive and champion for our most vulnerable Californians. Congressman Gomez served the people of Assembly District 51 with passion and integrity and, if elected, I look forward to continuing to work with Congressman Gomez in standing up for working families and immigrants, and making their issues a top priority in the State Assembly.”

National Women’s Political Caucus California Endorses Wendy Carrillo for Assembly District 51

September 26, 2017 By wendy

Los Angeles, CA – The National Women’s Political Caucus California (NWPC CA) is pleased to endorse Wendy Carrillo in her race for California’s 51st Assembly District.  This special election will be held on October 3rd, 2017.

Wendy Carrillo is a community advocate and award winning journalist, with a distinguished career as a radio and digital host, writer and producer. For ten years, she was host and executive producer of “Knowledge is Power,” a progressive community based radio program.

Wendy previously served as part of the communications team that supported organizing efforts for long term healthcare workers — fighting for fair wages for caregivers who provide seniors and people with disabilities the dignity to stay in their homes.

As an immigrant family, Wendy’s parents taught her and her sisters to be independent, strong and committed to the community that raised them.

Wendy said of the endorsement “I am honored to have the support of NWPC California, an incredible group of inspiring women. It proves that yes, the American Dream is still alive as a candidate like me—who was formerly undocumented—can earn this prestigious endorsement,” Carrillo said.  “In the Assembly, I will be a leader in the fight for gender pay equity, educational opportunity, protecting choice and women’s healthcare funding. As someone who has mentored young girls and women, empowering them the succeed, it is my goal to continue to that in the state legislature.”

The NWPC, founded in 1971, is a national, multi-partisan, grassroots membership organization dedicated to identifying, recruiting, training and supporting women candidates for elected and appointed office.

September 25, 2017 By wendy

September 25, 2017

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILY’s List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Wendy Carrillo for California’s Assembly District 51. Lucinda Guinn, Vice President of Campaigns at EMILY’s List, released the following statement:

“As a community advocate and labor activist, Wendy has been on the front lines fighting for economic security for women and families, women’s rights and reproductive health care, immigrant rights, LGBTQ rights, and environmental justice.”

“There are fewer women in the California legislature than a decade ago. Now, more than ever, we need a leader like Wendy Carrillo who will always stand up and give women and families a much-needed voice – and EMILY’s List is proud to endorse Wendy Carrillo for Assembly District 51.”

Wendy Carrillo is running for California’s Assembly District 51 in a special election to be held on October 3. Wendy is a community activist and formerly undocumented immigrant. As a child, her family emigrated to East Los Angeles from El Salvador, fleeing civil war and violence. After becoming a U.S. citizen in her early 20s, Wendy built a career as a respected journalist and radio host, most notably as the host and executive producer of “Knowledge is Power,” a show on Los Angeles Power 106FM which tackled social justice issues in the community. She also served on the communications team for SEIU ULTCW, where she fought for fair wages for caregivers, immigration reform, and health care for all. Most recently, Wendy co-founded Reported.ly, a social media start-up covering human rights, global conflict, and social movements. In 2016, she spent two months covering the Standing Rock protests against the North Dakota Access Pipeline, a movement started by Native American indigenous women.

EMILY’s List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILY’s List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Since the 2016 election, thousands of women and counting have reached out to us about running for office. To harness this energy, EMILY’s List has launched Run to Win, an unprecedented effort to get more women to run at the local, state, and national levels.

Today, community advocate Wendy Carrillo is announcing her candidacy for State Assembly District 51.  This will be a special election to fill the seat being vacated by Assemblyman Jimmy Gomez who has been elected to Congress.

“First, I want to congratulate our next Congressman Jimmy Gomez on his victory last night,” said Carrillo. “Like Jimmy Gomez, I will be a leader for the people, fighting for educational opportunity, access to quality healthcare, living wage jobs and social justice.”

Carrillo says she is throwing her hat into the ring for Assembly to advance the values our families care about – opportunity, equality and fairness.

“As a formerly undocumented immigrant who came to the US as a young child, I know what it means achieve the American Dream – to get a good education, to have access to quality healthcare and the opportunity to have a high-wage job,” said Carrillo.  “I will never stop fighting against income inequality and for those who need a voice in our political system.”

In her career as an award-winning journalist, Wendy hosted and produced a community based radio program in Los Angeles, delving into issues ranging from access to higher education and ending the school to prison pipeline to environmental justice and political transparency.

Wendy previously led communications and organizing efforts for long term care workers at SEIU Local 2015.  Her work included fighting for fair wages for caregivers who provide our seniors and those with disabilities the dignity to stay in their homes as well as ensuring safe staff ratios in nursing homes.

“I’ve been on the frontlines of environmental justice, women’s rights, LGBTQ rights, immigration rights and social justice movements,” said Carrillo.  “I will fight for gender pay equity, sexual assault prevention and against domestic violence.”

“We need girls and children from our communities of color to be part of the STEM programs in our schools.  College should be a benefit shared by all, not a financial burden that saddles young people with debt,” Carrillo concluded.

Wendy Carrillo grew up in Boyle Heights and City Terrace and is a proud graduate of local public schools.  She is a graduate of East Los Angeles College and Cal State Los Angeles, where she earned her BA and USC, where she earned her Master’s Degree.
